Nebraska's First Worker Owned Cooperative
With land located near Roca, NE, Salt Creek Farmers Cooperative is Nebraska’s first-ever worker-owned cooperative farm. A cooperative business is different than other business structures because it is owned and controlled by a group of people who come together to meet the economic, social, and cultural needs as a jointly-owned business. At Salt Creek Cooperative, the farm workers in the business are also the owners of the business - they make the business and financial decisions democratically. In other business structures, a single owner may be the sole decision maker in the business.
Challenging Conventional Agriculture
The primary purpose of Salt Creek Cooperative is to increase Lincoln’s food sovereignty by sharing the joy of sustainably farmed herbs, flowers and veggies. Challenging conventional agricultural practices, Salt Creek doesn’t use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. They strive to blend the barrier between what is prairie and farm by growing native plants to the land.
Founded in the Autumn of 2021, three member-owners worked diligently to have their first production season in 2022. On only six acres, Salt Creek Farmers Cooperative grows organic no-till produce.
