Meet the Hendl Family
After Matt Hendl served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy, he, his wife Emely, and their daughter Annika decided it was time to try providing for their neighbors in a different way. So they left Connecticut and returned to Emely’s roots here in Nebraska with the sole purpose of starting their own farm.
Building an operation from the ground up is no easy task, but the Hendl’s were patient. They started small with a flock of chickens, then bee hives, and lastly their well-mannered herd of KuneKune pigs. They attribute their successes to trial and error, and are more than willing to share their experiences with “anyone willing to learn about where our food comes from.” The Hendls are truly passionate about “small regenerative agriculture.”
Health & Sustainability
Anchor Meadow Farm is dedicated to practicing sustainability, as shown not only in their cover crop rotation, but also in the breeding of their pigs. The KuneKune is a gentle grazer that doesn’t destroy the root system of a plant, allowing the leafy greens to sprout year after year. Their size also allows for greater land conservation as more KuneKune can be sustained on fewer acres.
The Hendls are intentional about the biodiversity that exists on their farm, considering how each species works together to create an environment similar to one that occurs naturally. Doing things “the way nature intended” means their marbled red meat is packed full of not only flavor but Omegas (3,6, 9) and vitamins (D, K, E). Anchor Meadow Farm is practicing organic and believes everything you put in or on your body should be something you can pronounce.
