Meet Devon Crews of Willow Way Farms in Davey Nebraska! This is Willow Way Farms 1st year as a member of BFBL and 1st year in production. Located just a few miles north of Lincoln, Willow Way Farms grows produce for their farmers' market stand, CSA (community supported agriculture), and wholesale accounts.
Willow Way Farms embraces Biointensive approach to growing food. This way of growing is generally human scale meaning no tractors and small amount of acres. It uses practices that at once maximize yield, and increase soil fertility and biodiversity. On two acres of land Devon is able to grow dozens of different crops using mostly hand tools. Efficient systems based on 'working smarter, not harder' make this type of farming sustainable and enjoyable.
Definition : Biointensive agriculture is an organic agricultural system that focuses on achieving maximum yields from a minimum area of land, while simultaneously increasing biodiversity and sustaining the fertility of the soil. The goal of the method is long term sustainability on a closed system basis.
Local compost from Big Red Worms and Alfalfa Meal from a farm outside of Fremont NE are used to boost soil fertility. Willow Way Farms uses a broadfork to aerate and loosen the soil of raised beds – making plant roots longer and healthier, while allowing closer plant spacing. Devon also transplants numerous crops like spinach, peas and green onions with a paper pot transplanter. Using this tool he is able to transplant hundreds of young plants in minutes, all without getting on hands and knees!
The immaculate and nutritious veggies from Willow Way Farms can be found every Sunday at the Sunday Farmers' Market at College View. For your midweek veggie fix Willow Way Farms sets up a public farm stand (and CSA pickup site) at the White Elm Taproom every Tuesday from 5:30 – 8.
If you're in need of a beautiful head of lettuce, crunchy, sweet carrots or if you're curious about bio intensive farming stop by the Sunday Market and White Elm on a Tuesday!
